It's Grammy time once again, HOLLAAAAAA.
Always a staple of my February, I will once again dive into this year's nominees and reveal who I think should win in their respective categories. Just a disclaimer: I won't be listing ALL categories, just selected ones that I have a particular interest in.
Here we go!!
Best New Artist-Bastille
This was kind of hard, because I personally think Sam Smith is overrated, Iggy Azalea is too commercial, Brandy Clark is too un-commercial, and HAIM is kind of old news. Bastille, I think, is definitely the better choice out of this year's nominees.
Record of the Year-"Chandelier" by Sia
The moment I heard this (on the day it came out: March 17, 2014...yep, I'm so much of a hipster I enjoyed the song WAAAYYY before it became popular) I fell in love with it. Don't get me wrong, "All About That Bass" and "Shake It Off" are fun and catchy, but "Chandelier" is just epic and expressive.
Song of the Year-"Take Me to Church" by Hozier
This was kind of a no brainer. The rest of the nominees in this category are either too controversial ("All About That Bass", "Shake It Off") or repetitive ("Chandelier", "Stay With Me"). I still don't know why "Take Me to Church" is so popular, but I will admit it's a well-written song.
Best Pop Solo Performance-"Chandelier" by Sia
Again, no other nominees can match the powerful and emotive punch that Sia's voice packs. This song shows her unique vocal abilities to their very best.
Best Pop Duo/Group Performance-"Bang Bang" by Jessie J, Ariana Grande, and Nicki Minaj
This choice was REALLY tough. "Bang Bang" came in the middle of 2014 and immediately wowed me with Jessie J and Ariana's soulful, sassy vocals while Nicki Minaj delivered one of her best raps to date. However, A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera also did a fantastic job in "Say Something".
Best Pop Vocal Album-"Ghost Stories" by Coldplay
Once again, I used process of elimination to help decide this category. I first got rid of the overrated (Ed Sheeran's "X" and Sam Smith's "In The Lonely Hour"), and then I got rid of the good, but not the best choices (Katy Perry's "Prism" and Miley Cyrus' "Bangerz"). Ariana Grande's "My Everything" is actually not a good album (it works as a singles-n-filler collection, but not much else), so Coldplay easily swept this one for me. Plus, who doesn't love a Coldplay record?
Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album-"Partners" by Barbra Streisand
What can I say, I do love me some Babs every once in a while! This was the album that made her the only artist to have a number one record in six different decades (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s), plus it features a buffet of male vocalists from a variety of genres to cater to every audience and please longtime Streisand fans. Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga come close with "Cheek to Cheek", but Babs edges them out with a more consistently unified and focused album.
Best Dance Recording-"Rather Be" by Clean Bandit and Jesse Glynne
Once again, I fell in love with this song the moment I heard it. Deep house is a genre that's never been properly showcased on the radio until 2014, when it became a surprise summer hit. Disclosure and Mary J Blige also stun with "F For You", but just like HAIM, it's kind of old news (it originally came out in 2013).
Best R&B Performance-"Drunk in Love" by Beyonce and Jay-Z
Come on, who else do you think should win this category? "Drunk in Love" is definitely one of the best songs on Beyonce's self-titled album, with a saucy video to match its sexually charged pleasures.
Best R&B Song-"Drunk in Love" by Beyonce and Jay-Z
^See the above justification
Best Urban Contemporary Album-"Beyonce" by Beyonce
Yeah it generated most of its hype because of its videos and surprise release more than its music, but don't be fooled. "Beyonce" is a great record, and certainly beats out other nominees such as Chris Brown and Pharrell Williams.
Best Country Album-"Platinum" by Miranda Lambert
If somebody else wins this category (I'm looking at you Eric Church) I will be VERY angry!! "Platinum" is a monster album that I voted the best album of 2014, period. It's filled head to toe with awesome songs sung by an artist at a peak of her artistry and musical abilities.
Best Comedy Album-"Mandatory Fun" by Weird Al Yankovic
It's Weird Al, need I say more?
Best Music Video-"Chandelier" by Sia
Not the visuals I would've expected for the song, but they sure do have an artistic aura about them that make them stand above other notable nominees such as "Happy" and "Turn Down for What"
And finally, the one you've all been waiting for!
Album of the Year-"Beyonce" by Beyonce
I know, the hype surrounding this album should make me want to throw it in with Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith in the "overrated" category, but I just can't. I mean, have you listened to "Beyonce"? There's no question that its music is by far some of the best Beyonce has ever produced, and for making such great artistic strides with this album, I think she well deserves this Grammy.
