Billboard Chart Review-1/10/13

This week's chart is dated January 19, 2013, but if reflects the sales week from January 1-January 7, 2013.

The Billboard Hot 100:

Song                                        Position            Last Week
Locked out of Heaven              1                      1

Ho Hey                                    4                      4
Thrift Shop                               5                      10        *Streaming Gainer*
Home                                       6                      9
Beauty and a Beat                    7                      5

One more night                         9                      8
I Cry                                        10                    11
Will Bruno Mars get off the top already?! I'll re-state that I hate "Locked out of Heaven", and does anyone else think it sounds like Michael Jackson's "Beat it"? Well it does, and Bruno is failing as a Michael wannabe. I'm surprised "Diamonds" went back up, and I was fully expecting "I knew you were trouble" to take number one this week, especially with its airplay. I'm excited that "Thrift Shop" entered the top 5, it's about time an indie song ruled the charts. I'm also surprised that "Home" is continuing to climb. I'm not a huge fan of "Scream and Shout" because it's really boring and repetitive. The rest of the top 10 I'm ok with, not much of a change from last week anyway, so. Outside of the top 10: Pink's "Try" goes back up 18-16, Ed Sheeran's "The A Team" falls 16-18, PitBull's "Dont Stop the Party" gains digital sales and shoots 31-17. "Sweet Nothing" by Calvin Harris and Florence rises 40-24, "Call Me Maybe" falls 27-29 in its 46th week, Kelly Clarkson's "Catch my Breath" jumps 36-30, "Somebody That I Used to Know" rises 48-43 in its 53rd week, "Lights" makes a surprising comeback from 50-45 in its 55th week, Ke$ha's "C'Mon" is the biggest gainer vaulting from 97-65, and taking the biggest fall is Bridgit Mendler's "Ready or Not" slipping 49-75.
The Billboard 200:
Album                                                  Position            Last Week
Les Miserables                                     1                      2
Babel                                                   2                      8          *Greatest Gainer*
Red                                                      3                      1
The world from the side of the moon     4                      11
Take me home                                      5                      3
Unorthodox Jukebox                            6                      4
Pitch Perfect                                         7                      10
The Lumineers                                      8                      9
Girl on Fire                                           9                      18
The Truth About Love                          10                    14
So a few albums benefitted from Amazon's low prices last week. Although Les Miz wasn't one of them, it ascends to number one simply because January's sales are miniscule. No title sold above 100,000 copies this week, and Les Miz tops the chart on the strength of only 92,000 units. "Babel" benefitted the most from low album prices, as did Phil Phillips' debut album. Alicia Keys fires up the chart nine places because of Amazon, and Pink's "The Truth About Love" got a little boost as well. Outside the top 10, Macklemore benefits from his single "Thrift Shop" and his fifth album "The Heist" goes from 52-21, Ke$ha's "Warrior" shoots 46-29, Bridgit Mendler keeps rising as "Hello My Name Is" goes from 77-58, Christina Aguilera's "Lotus" vaults 98-63, David Guetta's "Nothing but the Beat" gains big and skyrockets 128-66, and "Born and Raised" by John Mayer goes 180-100.

The rest of January will be uneventful as there are no more major releases coming out this month.
