In Defense of Nicki Minaj

Okay, just from reading the title of this post, I know you already have an opinion of Nicki Minaj. And I'm guessing it's an unfavorable one, since that seems to be the popular opinion of her now. I'll start off by saying I know we're all entitled to our own opinions, but I've been getting really pissed off at the backlash she gets for, well, pretty much everything she does. Everybody bashes her on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and any other social media network, and in A Dose of Buckley's Worst Songs of 2012 list, she appeared on it FIVE times. I like A Dose of Buckley, I think he's really funny and can express his opinions well, but what I don't like about him is how he constantly bitches about how much he hates her. Enough already! So, just like how I defended Rebecca Black, it's now my time to finally address the main reasons why people say they hate Nicki Minaj, and later in the week I'll defend her song "Stupid Hoe".
So people hate Nicki Minaj because:

1. She's Untalented
As a what? Singer? Rapper? Fashion Designer? This insult just gets thrown around without anyone backing it up. Now, I'll remind everyone that she is a rapper, she was never meant to actually sing notes. The fact that she does anyway I know can be a turn off to most, but as far as singing rappers go, she's probably the best of that lot. Have you ever heard Lil Wayne, Drake, and Flo Rida sing? Yeah, they're atrocious, Nicki is a step up, so just be grateful she can at least carry a note without it sounding completely off-pitch (I know auto-tune goes into that as well, but at least she uses it, the previously mentioned rappers don't and they sound like absolute shit). As a rapper, at least she tries to use words that rhyme. Yeah she usually just rhymes words with themselves or forces her Roman accent to make two words sound alike, but at least she's trying. She's putting in some effort to make music, while Lil Wayne, as I have previously stated, just spits out typical rap words such as bitch, hoe, money, club, or whatever he raps about, and then no matter what word he used, he ALWAYS rhymes it with nigga. I'm sorry, but am I the only one that finds this offensive? Drake does it too, but no one calls them untalented (except for me), now do they? They, along with the majority of talent-less rappers of the new millennium, are lazy shits, but for some reason, Nicki is the one getting the brunt of all the hate, even though she puts in more effort than all of those people combined. But yeah, a female rapper who's constantly working on her brand and new material, writes her own songs, produces her albums, and comes up with new crazy outfits is the untalented one...Not.

2. She can't rap or sing
I've already addressed this, but this is another reason why people say they don't like her. Even I'll agree that she's not the best vocalist, but who is in the rap world? Once again, they were not blessed with vocal chops like Mariah or Whitney, nor do they try to act like it. Nicki's pop songs stay within her range and she knows what she has to work with. Whenever Lil Wayne tries to sing, I throw up a little.
And as far as her rapping goes, once again, she's not with the likes of Lil Kim, Missy Elliot, Lisa Lopes, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Salt-n-Peppa, or Da Brat, but she's far better than Lil Wayne, Drake, YC, 2 Chainz, Juicy J, and all those other morons. She's not the best, but she's definitely not the worst.

3. Her songwriting sucks
I think people are taking her WAY too seriously. Whenever I hear songs like "Stupid Hoe" and "Starships", or lyrics like, "I'm not Jasmine, I am Aladdin, and sometimes I feel like a dungeon dragon", I just laugh and rap along with her. She has a good poker face, but Nicki is not that serious of a person. And some of her songs like "Moment 4 Life", "Your Love", "Marilyn Monroe" (especially that one), and "Pound the Alarm" are actually pretty good quality, they're not like Adele's level of music, but they're still enjoyable songs. If you were to stop getting hell-bent over the quality of her songs and just learn to just enjoy them, I bet you wouldn't hate her as much. I understand her songwriting isn't for everyone, but even so, all of the negative responses are a bit too heavy. So yeah, just chill the fuck out, it's just rap and pop music, and at least she's not rapping about how many bitches she fucks, how much more money she has than you, so on and so forth. She raps about her own life, something very common in all music, and she knows what she has and doesn't try to pretend that she's better than everybody else, she only disses the people she knows she's better than.

4. She's corrupting young girls
I read this on Facebook and I'm like, "Are you fucking kidding me?!" Once again, this insult gets thrown at her but no one says anything else to prove it. How is she corrupting young girls? Short skirts? No Shirts? Going commando and acting like an idiot? The Kardashians do that on a daily basis, this "corruption" of young girls was happening WAY before Nicki came along. Also, I'll remind you for the third time, she's a RAPPER. Rap is not a kid-friendly genre, nor was it her intention to be a role-model for young kids. That's their own decision to make, and it's not Nicki's fault if they follow them because they're kids, they're young and dumb and don't know any better. Their parents can intervene and make them stop watching/listening to Nicki Minaj if they want to. If you think Nicki is not a good role model, then that's your problem, that's your opinion, it's not fact in any way, especially when her outfits aren't all that revealing when compared to Lady Gaga, Madonna, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, and Rihanna's outfits. Also, have you ever heard her speak in an interview? She's more articulate and poised than some of the veteran musicians who do interviews. Like Enya, she makes wonderful music, but it's like nails on a chalk-board when she's in an interview because she uses so many "likes" and "ums" and "you knows". Nicki goes in knowing what she's going to say and says it clearly. That doesn't sound like a bad role model to me.

5. She's a slut, gosh darnit!
Really? Have you ever seen her on a corner picking up guys and taking their money after she's fucked them? I haven't either, so she's not a slut. Once again, her outlandish outfits are very provocative, but she doesn't rap about how many guys she fucks, she doesn't rap about the act of sex too often, and quite frankly, people are just calling her a slut because her breasts are huge, her ass is super-sized, and she was blessed with a hot body. That's right, it's jealousy that leads to these accusations, not actual fact. If a guy is calling her a slut, then he's either in denial, he's just pretending he doesn't like her to not make his girlfriend angry, or he's an old man who needs to get the stick out of his rear, or his head, one of the two.

I love Nicki Minaj. I listened to "Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded" more than any other album last year, and I think she's genuine. I can connect to her struggles with people and her so called "friends" because her songs come from a real place. They're not fabrications of her imagination so she can continue to make bank and shove it in your face (once again I refer you to the Kardashians, Drake, Lil Wayne etc.). And if you even start to say that I'm a hypocrite because I'm bitching about people who bitch, think again. Unlike those people, I have proven facts and specific reasons for why I like her and why people are hating on her too much. The haters are going to hate because she's an influence, and they're not. They're all bitterly jealous, and she's living her life and is doing the best she can to make a living for herself. Once again, I don't take her too seriously, and I just enjoy the rapid fire raps, the comedic disses, and her Roman and Martha voices as they come. She's not Adele, we know that, but she's not the worst musician in the world either.
