In Defense of Rebecca Black and "Friday"

Since it's Friday, I think this is the perfect time to discuss Rebecca Black and her claim to internet fame "Friday". Yeah, all of you know this song because every person with a YouTube account and their whole family tree have commented on this song to death. Personally, I'm quite appalled at the extreme negative reaction its had, especially with people telling Rebecca to kill herself. That is not okay, I don't care how bad a song is. And also, dubbing it "The Worst Song Ever" isn't okay with me either, because in all actuality, it isn't. Not by a long shot.

You see, I think people were a little too quick to judge her based off of this. All of the arguments for why this song is the worst song ever and that Rebecca can't sing are not even close to being viable, because if you were to sit down and think about these things for a few seconds, you would realize that "Friday" is not the worst song ever made. There are basically five arguments for why everyone thinks this is the worst song ever, and I will now shoot them down one by one:

1. The Lyrics Are Stupid
Okay, I understand where this is coming from. Putting "yesterday was Thursday, today is Friday, tomorrow is Saturday and Sunday comes afterward" in a song does not give Rebecca any credibility what-so-ever, and I understand that the song as a whole is childish and simple with its tales of waking up, doing your morning routine, and trying to find a spot on the bus (or the car that's somehow being driven by 14-year olds), but there are a boat-load of songs that have even more simple lyrics than this song. Here are examples of some of these songs, most of which were number one hits, by the way:
"Boom Boom Pow" ('boom boom boom, gotta get that, boom boom boom'...over and over again)
"Baby" ('baby, baby, baby, ooooh'...OVER and OVER AGAIN!), and any song by Bieber
"Dancing Crazy" ('I like you and you like me, we get together and we're happy'...WTF??!)
Any Song by Lil Wayne (or featuring Lil Wayne)
Any Song by Soulja Boy
"One Thing" ('I need that one thing, and you've got that one thing'...WTSF??!!)
"Stupid Hoe" ('you a stupid hoe, you a you a stupid hoe...over and over again')

The list goes on and on, and if you still believe that any of the above songs are better than "Friday", you need to visit a proctologist, so you can get your head removed from your rear. There have been plenty of widely popular songs that are even more mundane than this, but those artists were never told to kill themselves, now were they?

2. Rebecca Black can't sing
False. You've probably have never heard her live, so you wouldn't know that she actually CAN sing, it's just that in this particular song her talent has been covered by auto-tune, which leads to this next argument

3. It uses auto-tune too much
Yes, but there are ALOT of artists who over-use auto-tune on a record-ly basis. Ke$ha as we all know uses it, Christina Aguilera uses it, Cher uses it, Kelly Clarkson has used it, every rapper probably uses it to hide the fact that they can't sing worth shit, and even this list goes on and on. And there are also alot of songs that are worse than this that rely heavily on auto-tune correction.

4. There's a stupid rap in the bridge
Yeah and? Remember those rappers I mentioned before? Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, Future, 2 Chainz, Drake, Tyga, T-Pain etc. We are constantly subjected to listen to their bullshit on the radio, and all they rap about is how many bitches they have, how many hoes they fuck, how much money they have, how cool their cars are, how much they party, so on and so forth. I'm sorry, but all of their material combined could be used as a torture device to make prisoners of war give up information about their country. "Friday" just uses a rap to continue its simple message, it's not vulgar, it's not explicit, it uses words that actually rhyme with each other (sorry Lil Wayne, but "money" and "nigga" don't rhyme). It's as annoying as the rest of the song, but it's still better than the rest of that previously mentioned garbage.

5. It's just annoying as fuck, dammit!
True, this song can be quite irritating, but people are honestly reading too much into this song. First of all, Rebecca didn't write it, she had no part in its production, she sang the song written by the worst record company ever (Ark Music Factory, and by the way, "Friday" is the best song they have to offer, if you want truly bad music, listen to the other crap they're trying to pass off as 'music'). And secondly, if Rebecca would have claimed that this song is a style parody of pop music, then the reaction would have been completely different. You would have said "wow, this girl is a genius!". But since she's clinging to it as serious work, you all feel the need to make appalling threats and comments towards her. I think Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber should be sent to the guillotine before Rebecca. And thirdly, do ya'll even know what pop music is? It consists of simple and mundane lyrics with a drum machine keeping the beat and added synths to add color, that's it. Really, this song is just pop music, it's not meant to be the next coming of Mariah or Whitney or Adele or any of that, it's music that's supposed to get under your skin and create a residence in your ears for the next few weeks until the next over-played pop song comes out.

I'm not trying to say that this song is good, because it's not, but I still enjoy listening to it. You can enjoy a song without appreciating it, and by this day and age you should have that skill down pat. But whatever, if my counter-arguments haven't convinced you that this isn't the worst song ever made, then you can keep listening to how Flo Rida wants a hoe to blow his whistle, how Lil Wayne thinks he's the shit by dropping the n-word every second, how Justin Bieber thinks he's an actual artist, and you can keep thinking that all other mainstream music is quality music. Meanwhile, I'm going to choose to not listen to songs I don't like and get on with my life. And I'm not going to bitch about songs that I don't like either, I will simply not listen to them. You should try it.
